The hunger strike by the students union of the University entered its 11th day today.

The stalemate at the North Eastern Hill University (NEHU) is just refusing to die even after the Union Education Ministry constituted a 2-member fact-finding committee to probe the allegations of mismanagement and other issues flagged by the teachers’ association and student body against Vice Chancellor Prabha Shankar Shukla.

The NEHU teachers association and the agitating students have expressed their sheer displeasure about the fact-finding committee, particularly about the composition of it.

NEHU Teachers Association vice-president Professor Prasenjit Biswas spoke exclusively to Northeast Live this morning and explained why the Teachers Association and the students are not happy with the probe committee.

The NEHU students union has said they will continue with their hunger strike as they too are not happy with the Union Education Ministry’s 2-member committee. Here is what NEHUSU General Secretary Tonohi Kharsati said.

“We are not happy with this development because the enquiry comitee does not include anyone from Meghalaya who knows the ethos of NEHU. However, we are not going into who should be in the enquiry committee and leave it to the best judgement of the authority. Yet we don’t find it acceptable the constitution of the enquiry committee as it does not include any representative from the sites of hunger striking students. Students are falling sick, they are on the 11th day of their hunger strike and it is going to be in definite and very strong and serious situation because the government has not responded in the right way. The government must respond in the right way by consulting us by making a panel which is acceptable and has neutral fair-minded people or not people who are suspected of covering up the whole situation. Therefore, students are unhappy and NEHUTA is really looking to find a solution stalemate, but we don’t know when the right moment to find a solution will arrive and how we are going to get right person in a very serious enquiry of this kind,” said Professor Prasenjit Biswas.

The hunger strike by the students union of the University entered its 11th day today.

The protesting students are demanding the immediate resignation of Vice Chancellor Prabha Shankar Shukla and other top officials, citing allegations of mismanagement, corruption, and administrative failure under his leadership.
