NEHU Students’ Hunger Strike Enters Day-4, 2 Students Hospitalised

The Meghalaya state government has decided to summon Vice Chancellor Shukla next week to assess the situation.
The ongoing hunger strike at North East Hill University (NEHU) entered its fourth day today, with escalating tensions as two members of the Khasi Students’ Union (KSU) were hospitalised due to the prolonged protest.
The two KSU members, Kevin Nelson Wanrap, General Secretary of the KSU NEHU unit, and Morningstar Suting, Assistant Sports Secretary of the KSU NEHU unit, were rushed to the hospital after showing signs of severe health issues.
The hunger strike, led by NEHU students, is to press for the removal of the Vice Chancellor, Professor Prabha Shankar Shukla. The students alleged mismanagement and other issues under his leadership, calling for his immediate resignation.
In response to the growing unrest, the Meghalaya state government has decided to summon Vice Chancellor Shukla next week to assess the situation. Authorities are concerned not only about the ongoing protests but also about the academic disruption, as NEHU’s undergraduate exams are scheduled for next week.
Meanwhile, representatives of the NEHU Teachers’ Association (NEHUTA) met Meghalaya Governor C.H. Vijayshankar yesterday and briefed him about the students’ demands and the tense situation on campus. Professor Prasenjit Biswas, Vice President of NEHUTA, revealed that Governor Vijayshankar expressed concern and urged the teachers to request the students to halt their hunger strike, advocating for the restoration of normalcy on campus.
The meeting, which lasted for nearly an hour at the Governor’s House in Shillong, led to the Governor’s assurance that he would discuss the matter with all concerned parties in the coming days to find an appropriate solution. Governor Vijayshankar, as the President’s representative, has the authority to call for an independent inquiry into the issues raised by the students and faculty.
Despite these developments, the NEHU Students Union has vowed to continue their hunger strike until their demands are addressed.
