NEHU has taken steps to adopt the New Education Policy NEP 2020 for undergraduate courses
In a significant move towards embracing educational reforms, the North-Eastern Hill University (NEHU) has taken steps to adopt the New Education Policy (NEP) 2020 for its undergraduate courses.
The Vice Chancellor of NEHU, Prabha Shankar Shukla, announced on July 19 that the university has directed all affiliated colleges to implement the NEP 2020 starting from the upcoming academic year.
During a media interaction, Vice Chancellor Prabha Shankar Shukla expressed his objective to implement the National Education Policy 2020 for the benefit of Meghalaya, the nation’s youth, and future generations.
He stated that the university had already made efforts to implement the new education policy for postgraduate students in the academic year 2022-2023. A letter has been circulated to all affiliated colleges of NEHU, directing them to implement the new education policy for undergraduate students starting from the upcoming academic session, commencing on August 1, 2023.
“My objective is to implement National Education policy 2020 for the benefit of Meghalaya and the generation and for the benefit of the youth of the country. And after my joining I am already doing the rigorous effort for implementation of new education policy in the university. We already have implemented the new education policy for the PG student for the academic of 2022-2023 and for Under graduate student we had already circulated the letter to all the affiliated colleges of the NEHU to implement new education policy for coming academic session which is going to start from 1st August 2023,” said Vice Chancellor Prabha Shankar Shukla.
A key aspect of the NEP 2020 implementation is the restructuring of undergraduate courses. According to the new policy, undergraduate programs will span four years, providing students with the option to exit at certain points. This means that students can choose to discontinue their studies after the first year and rejoin later whenever they find it feasible to continue their education.
Vice Chancellor Shukla mentioned plans to hold a meeting with principals to involve the colleges and discuss the inclusion of college students in employment drives.
While NEHU has communicated the directive to all affiliated college principals, acknowledging the challenges some institutions may face in immediate implementation, Vice Chancellor Shukla has offered an option to defer the implementation for one academic year.
Principals of colleges that are not yet prepared to implement the NEP 2020 are encouraged to reach out to the authorities and provide detailed reasons for their current inability to comply.
