NEHU Crisis: Protesting Students Temporarily Suspends Their Hunger Strike after 16 Days

The student, however, stated that this is not the end of their agitation, and they will continue to protest.

After 16 long days, the protesting students at the North-Eastern Hill University (NEHU) in Shillong, Meghalaya have temporarily suspended their hunger strike.

The move comes after the NEHU Students Union (NEHUSU) and the NEHU Teachers Association (NEHUTA) held an emergency meeting at the University premises today.

A representative of the protesting students said, “In consideration of the requests from teachers, staff, and doctors, and based on medical advice, we have decided to temporarily suspend the hunger strike due to the deteriorating health of those who have been fasting for 16 days.”

The student, however, stated that this is not the end of their agitation, and they will continue to protest on weekdays staying at the site until their demands are met.

“This does not mean the end of our agitation. We will continue protesting during weekdays from 9 AM to 5 PM and will not move from this place until our demands are met,” he added.

The students had launched an indefinite hunger strike demanding the resignation of Vice Chancellor Prof Prabha Shankar Shukla and other top officials, citing allegations of mismanagement, corruption, and administrative failure under his leadership.

Professor Shukla is currently on leave for 15 days.

The temporary suspension of the indefinite hunger strike also comes after the submission of an internal inquiry report to the Union Education Ministry today.

The report was compiled by the Stakeholders Enquiry Committee formed by the students and faculty of the university.

Earlier yesterday Meghalaya Chief Secretary DP Wahlang and DGP Idashisha Nongrang visited the NEHU campus and urged the protesting students to suspend the indefinite hunger strike.

Tourism minister Paul Lyngdoh also interacted with the students and said that the State Government will continue to be in touch with the Union Education Ministry on the issue.

The new Vice-Chancellor In-Charge Professor Nirmalendu Saha also expressed concern about the student’s well-being and assured to restore peace and normalcy on the campus.
