NEHU Crisis: Protesting Students Reject Appointment of 2 Pro Vice Chancellors

First Published: 14th November, 2024 9:43 IST

The appointments come in response to mounting student protests, with NEHU students currently engaged in an indefinite hunger strike.

The North Eastern Hill University Students Union (NEHUSU) and the North Eastern Hill University Teachers Association (NEHUTA) have outrightly rejected embattled Vice Chancellor Prof Prabha Shankar Shukla’s decision to appoint two Pro Vice Chancellors for the Shillong and Tura campuses.

The agitating students who have been on an indefinite strike for the last 10 days have boycotted the appointments alleging that the Pro VCs have been made by flouting standard rules.

General secretary of the NEHUSU Toniho Kharsati, speaking to Northeast Live, condemned VC Shukla’s decision and said that the hunger strike will continue until the latter is removed from the post. The North Eastern Hill University Teachers Association (NEHUTA) too has cried foul over the appointment of the 2 pro vice chancellors. Speaking to Northeast Live, NEHUTA president Professor Lakhon Kma termed it as a mockery of the whole situation by VC Prabha Shankar Shukla.

In a move aimed at addressing the ongoing protests by the NEHU students, the Vice Chancellor of Meghalaya’s North-Eastern Hill University (NEHU), Prof. Prabha Shankar Shukla, appointed new Pro Vice-Chancellors for the university’s Shillong and Tura campuses on the night of November 13.

For the Shillong campus, Prof. Sherwin May Sungoh, from the Department of Education, has been appointed as the Pro VC. Dr. Fameline K. Marak from the Department of Garo has been appointed as the Pro VC for the Tura campus. The appointments, which are subject to approval by the Executive Council, are effective from November 13.

The appointments come in response to mounting student protests, with NEHU students currently engaged in an indefinite hunger strike. The protests, which have drawn attention to issues such as inadequate facilities and the demand for the resignation of Vice Chancellor Shukla, as well as other senior university officials, have gained national attention.

The Central Executive Committee of the Students’ Federation of India (SFI) and the Jawaharlal Nehru University Students’ Union (JNUSU) have expressed solidarity with the protesting students. As the health of the hunger-striking students deteriorates, with several being hospitalized, the situation at NEHU has become increasingly critical.”
