Amid NEHU Community’s Demand for His Removal, VC Shukla Urges Stability and Cooperation

He acknowledged that delays in administrative processes, especially CAS promotions, have caused frustration.

Even as whole community of North-Eastern Hill University (NEHU) intensify their demand for his removal, Vice-Chancellor Prof. Prabha Shankar Shukla has issued an appeal for stability and cooperation. However, his plea has been met with strong resistance, as university communities continue to accuse him of administrative failures, stalled Career Advancement Scheme (CAS) promotions, and other irregularities.

The protests against Prof. Shukla have been brewing for months, with faculty members expressing frustration over delays in CAS promotions, particularly affecting senior academicians nearing retirement.

In a recent statement, Prof. Shukla acknowledged the disruptions and assured that finalising CAS promotions remains a top priority. He urged faculty members to collaborate in restoring normalcy, emphasising that NEHU’s academic excellence depends on unity between faculty, staff, and administration.

The Vice Chancellor expressed appreciation for the dedication of faculty members who continue to guide students and shape the future of the institution. He acknowledged that delays in administrative processes, especially CAS promotions, have caused frustration.

When he initiated the CAS process for the second time in 2024, his goal was to finalise promotions by March 2025, prioritising those nearing retirement. However, unforeseen challenges have stalled progress. He assured faculty members that completing the promotions remains a top priority and that all deserving faculty will receive due recognition in the coming months.

Beyond CAS promotions, the Vice Chancellor highlighted how disruptions have affected NEHU’s core objectives education and research. Administrative slowdowns have delayed crucial approvals, disrupted academic schedules, and created uncertainty for students, over 82% of whom come from Meghalaya. He stressed that faculty members have a shared responsibility to provide students with a stable academic environment and quality education.

“A university thrives when faculty, staff, and administration collaborate in harmony, upholding the ethics of teaching,” he said. He urged faculty members to set aside differences and work together to restore normalcy, ensuring that NEHU continues to excel in academic progress, faculty recognition, and student success.

The Vice Chancellor reaffirmed his openness to dialogue, collaboration, and support for all faculty members in achieving NEHU’s academic mission. He called for unity and a shared vision to strengthen the university’s reputation and make it an institution of pride for all.
