Speaking to Northeast Live, Dr Alok Kumar Singh said the incident occurred around 4:45 pm when six youths entered his room.

Sensation prevailed in North Eastern Hill University (NEHU), Shillong, after six unidentified youths barged into the official chamber of Dr Alok Kumar Singh, Assistant Professor in the Hindi Department, and assaulted him brutally on Thursday evening.

Speaking to Northeast Live, Dr Alok Kumar Singh said the incident occurred around 4:45 pm when six youths entered his room. One of them remained stationed outside, while the others locked the door from inside. They unplugged the computer and took away his mobile phone, preventing any communication.

Dr Alok Kumar Singh said the attackers refused to listen to him and accused him of following a “different ideology”. They blamed him for engaging in politics within the university and insisted they did not want to hear any explanation. After a brief exchange of words, they started beating him and even threatened to kill him.

Dr Alok Kumar Singh suffered injuries to his neck, leg, head, and stomach during the assault. As his colleagues rushed to help him, the youth guarding the door allegedly stopped them from entering the room.

Following the attack, Dr Alok Kumar Singh was taken to a hospital in a university ambulance and provided first aid. He later informed the incident to the officiating Vice Chancellor of NEHU and tried to reach out to the President of NEHUTA (North Eastern Hill University Teachers’ Association), but the latter did not respond to his call, Singh said.

Expressing his anguish, Dr Alok Kumar Singh said, “I am shocked and depressed. I am not safe in my own University. I feel extremely sad that such an incident took place inside such a prominent institution.”
