In a massive show of strength, the Congress and 16 opposition parties assembled at the Ram Leela Maidan in New Delhi to send a clear message to the Centre against spiralling petrol and diesel prices.

Earlier, Congress President Rahul Gandhi led the charge by offering tributes to the Father of the Nation Mahatma Gandhi in Raj Ghat.

Among those who are accompanying the Congress president Rahul Gandhi were UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi, former prime minister Manmohan Singh, Ghulam Nabi Azad, NCP leader Sharad Pawar, RJD leader Sharad Yadav besides many other UPA leaders.

Meanwhile, Congress protest against steep hike in fuel prices took an ugly turn in Itanagar following protesters clashing with police.

Several members of the women’s wing of the Congress alleged that police personnel misbehaved with them. At least 50 Arunachal Pradesh Youth Congress members have been detained by the Itanagar police.

Massive protests were also witnessed in Assam’s Guwahati. And protests were also seen in Silchar with Congress supporters among others demonstrating in front of the Deputy Commissioner’s Office. As many as 150 protesters were detained by the police.
