NPCC President and Lok Sabha Supongmeren Jamir asserted the joining of the young leaders is an encouragement for the Congress party

In another significant development for the Nagaland Pradesh Congress Committee (NPCC), a total of 15 leaders from the National People’s Party (NPP) have joined the congress fold yesterday in the presence of NPCC President and Lok Sabha MP Supongmeren Jamir and NPCC Working President Khriedi Theunuo here at Congress Bhavan, Kohima.

The NPP leaders who have joined include NPP State Vice President Bitong Sangtam, General Secretary Organisation L.Hiketo Shohe, Mahila State Executive member Illina Shohe, Secretary Bipin Kumar and Akiti Chishi besides others party leaders from the National People’s Youth Front.

NPCC President and Lok Sabha Supongmeren Jamir asserted the joining of the young leaders is an encouragement for the Congress party and will also strengthen the party’s central leadership.

NPP leaders, who joined the Congress fold expressed their discontentment on how the party organization was functioning and stated that there is a lack of electoral prospect in NPP and differences in ideas and ideologies.

“We felt that it is rather to be in a good opposition then to be in a coalition government and speak nothing for ourselves and for the people in general,” said L.Hiketo Shohe, former General Secretary of Organisation (NPP) who were among those who joined the Congress yesterday.

“We joined Congress because we can see something for the future and we have come with young people who can work hard for the people,” stated the former NPP Vice President Bitong Sangtam.

Meanwhile, the Congress Party in Nagaland has raised serious concerns regarding the Protected Area Regime (PAR) imposed by the Indian government on December 17, 2024. Working President of the Nagaland Pradesh Congress Committee (NPCC), Khriedi Theunuo voiced the party’s strong opposition to the policy, describing it as a move that could isolate Nagaland from the rest of the country and hinder its development. The leader highlighted how, in recent years, Nagaland has seen a growth in domestic and international tourists, particularly during events like the Hornbill Festival, which has helped to improve the state’s image and foster economic growth.

“People are coming to Nagaland from across the world to explore the culture, lifestyle, and natural beauty of our state. The Hornbill Festival alone saw an impressive number of visitors from both within India and abroad, many of whom have expressed their desire to return and even invest in the region,” the NPCC Vice President said.

The party leader pointed out that, when such opportunities are being opened now for the people of Nagaland, such type of policy will isolate Nagaland from the rest of the country.

He therefore said this kind of policy is detrimental not just to the people of Nagaland, but to the Government of India, adding that they cannot make a particular state a prohibited restricted area.

Theunuo also said Nagaland is now seen as a peaceful, welcoming state, and these restrictions will only create unnecessary barriers, isolating us from potential opportunities.

The NPCC working vice president emphasized that the people of Nagaland have always been welcoming to outsiders, and their hospitality is one of the key factors that has contributed to the state’s growing popularity among tourists and investors.

The NPCC leader said the party is planning to raise the issue in Parliament through their Member of Parliament, Supongmeren Jamir seeking a review of the policy.

He also assured the people of Nagaland that the Congress Party will not let this  matter be left unattended and exuded  hope the government of India will consider the case positively.”
