Nagaland LS MP S. Supongmeren Jamir Urges Recognition of Tribal Dialects as Third Language for GDS Recruitment

Nagaland Lok Sabha MP S. Supongmeren Jamir has called on the state government to recognize tribal dialects as a ‘third language’ for Gramin Dak Sevak (GDS) recruitment in the Postal Department. The move, he said, would significantly enhance employment opportunities for local youth across the state.
In a letter to Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio, Jamir expressed concern over the increasing engagement of non-local candidates in GDS positions in Nagaland and other Northeastern states. He noted that the current online recruitment process, based solely on Class X marks in English or Hindi, places local candidates at a disadvantage—especially those more fluent in tribal dialects.
Jamir pointed out that between 2022 and 2023, 364 GDS posts were advertised in Nagaland, including a special drive for 143 posts in January 2023. However, local youth have struggled to secure these jobs due to the lack of formal recognition of their native languages.
Citing Arunachal Pradesh as a model—where 23 tribal dialects have been recognized for GDS recruitment—Jamir urged the Nagaland government to follow suit.
He recommended action through the Home Department and the Department of Art & Culture to officially recognize tribal dialects, in line with the state’s recognition of 15 Naga tribes and others.
Jamir emphasized that such a step is vital for promoting local employment and preserving Nagaland’s rich linguistic heritage.
