The Neiphiu Rio government will also urge the Centre to enact appropriate regulations and lay down processes for movement of people across the borders.
In a significant development, the Nagaland Government has decided to request the Centre to revoke it’s decision of scrapping the Free Movement Regime (FMR) with Myanmar.
Chief Minister Rio chaired a cabinet meeting soon after Union Home Minister Amit Shah made it official that the MHA has decided to scrap the FMR.
As per inputs, the Neiphiu Rio government will also urge the Centre to enact appropriate regulations and lay down processes for movement of people across the borders. The Cabinet has further decided to make a request for accomodating village council authorities concerned in the entire system of regulations of the FMR.
Union Home Minister Amit Shah backing the Centre’s decision had stated, that it was done to ensure the internal security of the country and to maintain the demographic structure of India’s North Eastern States bordering Myanmar.
On the sidelines of the Republic Day celebrations, the Nagaland Chief Minister had maintained that there will be consultations with the people before the Centre’s decision to fence the porous India, Myanmar border comes into effect.
Prior to this on January 22, Nagaland Deputy CM Y Patton had informed that the state government would hold consultations on the border fencing issue with other Northeast states which shares its borders with the neighbouring nation.
Worth mentioning, Nagaland is the second state after Mizoram to oppose the border fencing with Myanmar and the Centre’s decision to end FMR.
Earlier, Mizoram CM Lalduhoma on January 4, had reportedly told Home Minister Amit Shah in New Delhi that the move to fence the border and end the FMR was unacceptable to the Mizos.
On January 8, Nagaland deputy CM Y. Patton during his meeting with Mizoram CM Lalduhoma had maintained that any resolution regarding fencing the Indo-Myanmar border would be unacceptable for the Nagas.
