Patton further said that the CoRRP in today's meeting have suggested the state govt to form a Commission to review the reservation policy.

The 5 Tribes Committee on Review of Reservation Policy (CoRRP) today held a meeting with Nagaland Government represented by Deputy Chief Minister Y Patton, Minister Temjen Imna Along, Minister Kaito Aye, Minister Metsubu Jamir and Minister Salhoutuonuo Kruse, at Nagaland Civil Secretariat in Kohima.

Speaking to journalists after the meeting, Deputy Chief Minister Y Patton said the committee and the government had a lengthy deliberation on the reservation policy and the government has appealed the CoRRP to give the cabinet two weeks time to come to a decision whether to form a commission.

Patton said “Actually they want us to take a hasty decision, either to scrap the backward quota Reservation or the remaining quotas should be given to the Five Tribes.”

Patton further said that the CoRRP in today’s meeting have suggested the state government to form a Commission to review the reservation policy.

Thus in conclusion we have come to the understanding that within two weeks, that is till 17 June, we have requested our tribal bodies for the first time to have a cabinet discussion for this, whether to set up a commission or not Patton also expressed gratitude to the CoRRP to keep their agitation in abeyance till the time the cabinet takes its decision.

Meanwhile, CoRRP Convenor Er Tesinlo Semy, said they had a fruitful meeting and informed the suggestion put forth by the Committee for a Commission to be formed to examine the core demands of the committee.

He also informed that CoRRP is keeping their agitation in abeyance from June 3.

Significatly, CoRRP had held its first phase of agitation on 29 May by marching to the Deputy Commissioner office in their respective districts and submitted a memorandum. According to CoRRP, job reservation policy was introduced in 1977 with an initial duration of 10 years. However, the state government after failing to renew it formally in 1987, issued an order in 1989 for continuation of reservation until further notice. CoRRP said its demand was either scrapping of job reservation policy for backward tribes or the remaining unreserved quota to be reserved exclusively for the five tribes.

The CoRRP is comprised of the Ao, Sema, Lotha, Angami, and Rengma tribes. It was formed in August 2023 to push for a review of what it alleged to be an “unfair job reservation policy in the government sector” that has placed the five tribes at a disadvantage.
