The state government is faced with a fresh challenge. Well, the family members of those killed in the Mon firing incident have refused to accept the compensation offered. As per inputs, they have resolved not to accept the ex-gratia till the time justice is delivered.
Responding to a query on the development, Advisor to State Government and BJP national spokesperson, Mmhonlumo Kikon has claimed that while some of the families have accepted the compensation offered by the government, others have refused to do so. Kikon added that he was waiting for an update on the matter.
It may be mentioned that the Oting Village Council has refused to accept ex-gratia provided by the state government to the kin of those deceased and injured in the Mon firing incident. The Village Council in a statement said that it had received an envelope containing an amount of Rs 18 lakh 30 thousand given by Minister Paiwang Konyak and Deputy Commissioner of Mon district.
The Village Council initially accepted the amount assuming it to be a token of love from minister Paiwang Konyak. However, after coming to know that the amount was an advance installment of an ex-gratia from the state government for the victims’ families and injured persons, the Village Council decided not to accept it. The Village Council maintained that it will not accept any ex-gratia until those behind the Mon firing incident are brought to justice and the AFSPA is repealed.
Meanwhile, Mmhonlumo Kikon came out in defence of Union Home Minister Amit Shah, who has received criticism from various quarters in the state over his statement on the Mon incident.
Kikon said that both the State Government and the Centre have taken strong exception to the killing of innocent civilians in Mon and that the ongoing inquiry both by the SIT and Army, led by a major general rank officer will give a complete overview of the incident. Kikon reiterated that the centre has condemned the incident in no uncertain terms.
And speaking on the special assembly session to be held on December 20th, Kikon said the government of Nagaland will press for the repeal of the Armed Forces Special Power Act. A cabinet memo on the same has already been issued, Kikon said adding that the Assembly will discuss the matter at length. Kikon added that the Nagaland government will leave no stone unturned to ensure that the SIT probe reaches its logical end within the stipulated deadline.
