Nagaland: Chief Commissioner NSBSG Atuo Mezhür Sekhose Passes Away, CM Pays Tribute

Rio recalled their long-standing association through joint work in youth and sports development, praising Mezhür’s humility, dedication, and unwavering commitment to public service.

Pelezotuo (Atuo) Mezhür Sekhose, State Chief Commissioner of the Nagaland Bharat Scouts and Guides, a prominent public figure, sports administrator, and educationist, passed away on Friday night following prolonged illness. He was 77.

Following the death of Sekhose, Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio, Rajya Sabha MP S. Phangnon Konyak and various organisations paid rich tributes to the deceased leader and conveyed their condolences to the bereaved family.

Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio also issued a condolence message, describing Mezhür as a “towering figure in Naga society—an exemplary individual whose legacy spans education, sports administration, and community service.”

The CM noted that Mezhür held many significant roles, including Regional Manager of the Commonwealth War Graves Commission (North East), Chef-de-Mission of Indian Football Teams on international tours, and Vice President of the All India Football Federation.

“His counsel, leadership, and vision inspired many, and his absence will be deeply felt across generations,” Rio wrote, adding that his personal connection with Mezhür deepened further through family ties.

“His passing is not only a loss to the state, but also a deeply personal loss to us,” the chief minister stated. On behalf of the government and his family, he extended condolences and prayers for the bereaved.

“His dedication, humility and unwavering commitment to public service were truly remarkable… His passing is not only a loss to the state, but also a deeply personal loss to us,” CM Rio said in a message.

Taking to X, MP Konyak said, “Deeply saddened to learn about the passing of Late Pelezotuo (Atuo) Mezhür Sekhose, Managing Director and Proprietor of Mezhür Higher Secondary School, Kohima, Nagaland. His immense contributions to the fields of education, sports, church and social welfare have left an indelible mark on our society, not only within the state but also at the international level.”

“We will always cherish the legacy he leaves behind, the values he imparted and the generosity he extended to those around him. Through his selfless guidance and leadership, he nurtured many successful individuals across diverse fields. Our thoughts and prayers are with the bereaved family and loved ones during this difficult time. May his soul rest in eternal peace.” She added.

Nagaland Football Association (NFA) and the state’s football fraternity have expressed shock and pain to learn about the untimely demise of one of its most respected and visionary leaders, late Pelezotuo (Atuo) Mezhür Sekhose.

In a condolence message, NFA president K. Neibou Sekhose and general secretary Benei M. Lamthiu described Late Atuo as a proactive, dedicated and visionary leader, whose contributions spanned across various spheres including sports, education, politics, church, and public service. His decades-long commitment to the development of football and youth welfare earned him recognition both in the state and at the national level, NFA stated.

NFA said that late Atuo remained committed to community service until his last breath, contributing significantly to the uplift of sports and society in Nagaland.

“Through his loss, the NFA and the Nagaland sporting community in particular, and the Nagas in general, have lost a very prominent, respected and influential leader and mentor,” NFA stated.

NFA expressed deepest condolences to the bereaved family and prayed that God grant strength and solace in this hour of grief and prayed that his towering legacy live on, and his soul rests in eternal peace.
