A series of powerful earthquakes jolted Myanmar and Thailand, leaving at least 23 people dead, 90 missing, several injured and buildings reduced to rubble. The strongest quake, measuring 7.7 on the Richter scale, struck Myanmar this afternoon, marking the most severe tremor in a century.

Myanmar: The Epicenter of Devastation

A devastating 7.7 magnitude earthquake struck central Myanmar at 12:50 PM, just minutes after an earlier 7.0 magnitude tremor at 12:00 PM, triggering widespread destruction and panic across the region. The twin quakes, followed by a series of powerful aftershocks, caused buildings to collapse, trapping residents under rubble.

The tremors were felt across Thailand, Bangladesh, China, and India’s Northeast, prompting Myanmar and Thailand to declare a state of emergency as rescue operations intensified.

Myanmar bore the brunt of the catastrophe, with 20 confirmed deaths and scores of injuries.

12:57 PM – A 5.0 magnitude aftershock hit the region.
1:07 PM – Another 4.9 magnitude earthquake was recorded at a depth of 30 km.
2:48 PM – A 4.4 magnitude tremor shook the region at a depth of 10 km.
3:30 PM – The latest earthquake, registering at 10 km depth, made the region even more vulnerable to further aftershocks.

Mosque Collapse in Mandalay Claims 20 Lives After Twin Earthquakes
At least 20 people lost their lives after a mosque collapsed in Myanmar’s Mandalay, following the earthquakes.

Fire and heavy damages were also reported at the Mandalay University in the country.

Buildings Collapse, Water Gushes from Rooftop Pools in Bangkok
Neighboring Thailand also felt the impact, with 3 confirmed deaths and over 90 people missing. In Bangkok, a high-rise building collapsed, trapping 81 people under debris, as rescue efforts continue. Shocking visuals emerged of water gushing from rooftop swimming pools, reflecting the intensity of the tremors.

Impact on India and Neighboring Countries
The tremors were strongly felt in northeastern India, particularly in Assam, Meghalaya, and Manipur.

Meghalaya’s East Garo Hills experienced a 4.0 magnitude quake, while Manipur’s Kamjong reported a 4.3 magnitude tremor. Reports suggest that tremors were also felt in Bangladesh and China’s Yunnan province, where authorities are monitoring the situation.

State of Emergency Declared in Myanmar and Thailand
In response to the devastating earthquakes, both Myanmar and Thailand have declared a state of emergency. Authorities are mobilizing rescue teams and disaster response units to affected areas as collapsed buildings, infrastructure damage, and rising casualties continue to overwhelm local resources. Emergency services are working around the clock to rescue trapped individuals and provide aid to those affected by the disaster.

Rescue Operations Underway
Rescue efforts in Myanmar and Thailand are in full swing as authorities struggle to locate missing people trapped under debris.

Thai Defence Minister Phumtham Wechachai confirmed that 81 people remain buried under rubble in Bangkok, with emergency crews racing against time to free them.

Meanwhile, international seismological agencies have warned that more aftershocks are likely in the coming hours. The governments of Myanmar, Thailand, and India are closely monitoring the situation and preparing for relief efforts.
