A fresh offensive by the Myanmar military in Chin State areas near the Indian border has triggered fears of more people crossing over to Mizoram.
Reportedly, Lunglei district alone has 432 Myanmar nationals seeking refuge in the district. Out of these, 13 are currently putting up at three makeshift camps at Phairuangkai, Vanhne and Rotlang while the rest are currently residing with relatives in various villages of the district.
Many Myanmarese refugees are still lodged in relief camps set up by NGOs and locals, while many were accommodated in the houses of their relatives in the state.
Besides the state government, NGOs, churches, student bodies, village authorities, and individuals have provided food, clothes and other aid to the refugees.
The state government, on several occasions, also sought help from the Centre for assistance to the Myanmarese people sheltered here.
Since the Military coup in Myanmar when the Junta wrested power in the Southeast Asian country on February 1, 2021 refugees have been crossing over to Mizoram and Manipur. Among the two Mizoram has received that bulk of the refugees due to its ethnic and traditional ties with the Chins. In a meeting with the Centre in December Chief Minister Zoramthanga had informed that more than 14000 refugees are taking shelter in Mizoram.
