Mizoram Governor Hari Babu Kambhampati on Monday appointed leader of the Mizo National Front (MNF) legislature party Rasik Mohan Chakma as the next chief executive member (CEM) of the Chakma Autonomous District Council (CADC).

Being CEM in the CADC a number of times and a legislator in the Mizoram legislative assembly for a term, R.M. Chakma would be sworn-in soon.

The Governor also appointed Hiranand Tongchangya as protem-chairman of the CADC, saying that Tongchangya will perform the duties of the Chairman of the council pending election to the election of the chairman and to preside over the first meeting of the newly constituted CADC.

The Governor also revoked the notification for suspension of the CADC issued on December 16, 2022 which placed the council under Governor’s Rule since then.

The MNF managed to become the largest single political party in the election to the 11th CADC held on May 9 by bagging 10 seats, one seat short of a simple majority in the 20-member council. But 3 BJP members of district council (MDCs) and 2 Congress MDCs joined the RM Chakma band wagon soon after the results were announced taking MNF’s tally to a comfortable 15 in the Council that has 24 seats – 20 elected and 4 nominated.
