Mizoram’s Premier Rajiv Gandhi Stadium Handed Over to Sports Dept From Home for Better Management

First Published: 22nd May, 2025 17:46 IST

Until now, the SYS Department had only overseen the stadium’s management, not its land or surrounding infrastructure.

In a major step aimed at strengthening sports infrastructure in Mizoram, the state’s most established sports facility, the Rajiv Gandhi Stadium has been handed over to the Sports and Youth Services (SYS) Department from the Home Department today for better management.

The handover ceremony was held at the office of Home Minister K. Sapdanga at Aizawl, marking a strategic shift in the administration of the multi-purpose field to ensure more effective and dedicated management under the SYS Department.

Situated in Mualpui in the southern part of Aizawl, the Rajiv Gandhi Stadium was previously under the Home Department and utilised by the 3rd Mizoram Armed Police (MAP) Battalion.

Until now, the SYS Department had only overseen the stadium’s management, not its land or surrounding infrastructure.

With the transfer now, both the land and all related infrastructure in and around the stadium will now be fully managed by the SYS Department.

The move is intended to consolidate sports development efforts under a single authority, ensuring better coordination, maintenance, and strategic investment.

Sports Minister Lalnghinglova Hmar expressed optimism about the future, highlighting that despite significant investments, Mizoram has seen limited progress at national sporting events.

Minister Lalnghinglova said that the government envisions the transformation of the Rajiv Gandhi Stadium and its surrounding areas into a state-of-the-art sports complex in which the goal is to establish a Centre of Excellence where young athletes can receive top-tier training and support.

The stadium has hosted various high-level matches, including those of I-League under the Home Department.
