As per reports, the party is likely to hold a meeting today to decide whether to accept Zoramthanga's resignation or not

Mizoram’s outgoing Chief Minister Zoramthanga has stepped down as the president of the Mizo National Front (MNF) after an over three-decade stint as its chief, following the party’s big defeat in the recently concluded assembly polls.

The MNF could garner only 10 seats, down from its tally of 27 in the 2018 assembly polls with Zoramthanga also losing his Aizawl East I seat.

The outgoing Chief Minister submitted his resignation to Tawnlula, senior Vice President of the party on Tuesday.

In his resignation letter, Zoramthanga said that he took moral responsibility as the president of the party for the poll defeat.

As per reports, the party is likely to hold a meeting today to decide whether to accept Zoramthanga’s resignation or not.

Earlier on Monday, Zoramthanga had blamed anti-incumbency and Covid pandemic for the defeat.

Zoramthanga has served as Mizoram’s Chief Minister three times.

He served as the Chief Minister twice consecutively, from 1998 to 2008 and came back to power in 2018 after a 10-year Congress rule under Lal Thanhawla.

He has been representing the constituency of Aizawl East-I since 2018.

Prior to that, he won from his home turf, Champhai in 1987, 1989, 1993, 1998, and 2003.
