Mizoram’s Ngopa village bags prestigious National Panchayat Award 2023

Ngopa, a remote village in Mizoram’s Saitual district has bagged the National Panchayat Award 2023. Ngopa is the first village from Mizoram to have received the prestigious award, announced by the Union Ministry of Panchayati Raj on April 7.

The award will be presented at the National Conference on Incentivization of Panchayats cum Award Ceremony to be held in Delhi on April 17.

Ngopa village ranked second after Karnataka’s Mullusoge under Nanaji Deshmukh Sarvottam Panchayat Satat Vikar Puraskar category.

The Mizoram village stood second as best performing gram panchayat in overall performance in 9 Localization of Sustainable Development Goals (LSDGs) themes, including poverty-free and enhanced livelihoods panchayat, clean and green panchayat and panchayat with good governance.

Ngopa is located in the northeastern part of Mizoram bordering Manipur about 182 km from Aizawl. There are 4,600 people living in the village, which has roughly 1,000 families. It is run by a village council made up of 7 people.

It may be mentioned that in the Nanaji Deshmukh Sarvottam Panchayat Satat Vikar Puraskar category, the first prize carries a cash prize of Rs. 1.5 crore, followed by Rs. 1.25 crore for the second prize, and Rs. 1 crore for the third prize.
