Mizoram’s Chakma Autonomous District Council to Hold Village Council Elections on March 12

The Mizoram State Election Commission has announced that elections for 88 village councils within the Chakma Autonomous District Council (CADC) will be held on 12 March. The model code of conduct is now in effect and will remain in place until 18 March, the expected conclusion of the election process.
Nomination papers must be submitted by 19 February, with scrutiny scheduled for 21 February. Candidates will have until 24 February to withdraw their nominations.

A total of 37,883 voters from 16,991 households are eligible to cast their ballots, including 18,721 female voters. The elections will cover 516 seats, comprising 428 general seats and 88 reserved seats—one in each village council—for women. Kamalanagar village has the highest voter count at 1,678, while Gobasuri village has the smallest electorate, with just 114 voters.
The CADC region, situated in Mizoram’s Lawngtlai district, shares a border with Bangladesh. It is predominantly inhabited by the Chakma community, who primarily follow Buddhism. The upcoming elections are expected to play a crucial role in shaping local governance in the district.
