Mizoram Polls 2023: MZP warns parties against giving tickets to women married to non-tribals

SD: The apex Mizo students body warned that it will resort to strong action if political parties defy its request.

At a time when the nation is taking a lot of pride in the Women’s Reservation Bill recently passed by the Parliament, the Mizo Zirlai Pawl (MZP), the apex Mizo students body, has warned political parties in poll-bound Mizoram to refrain from giving tickets to Mizo women married to non-tribal.

“The MZP will oppose candidacy of women who married outside the tribal community,” MZP President H Lalthianglima said addressing a press conference in Aizawl on Friday.

The MZP appealed to all the political parties not to allow any women married to non-tribal contest the upcoming polls as this would polarise the Mizo society.

“The state legislature being the outcome of revolutionary movement which had cost a number of our brave revolutionaries, we will never allow a non-tribal to have a seat inside the Assembly house,” the MZP president said.

“Such women may be highly educated and have the capacity to bring development, the state and the people do not need them as they will destroy the social fabric and have the Mizo tribe assimilated,” he further said.

He said that there are many states where the natives have been decimated to a minority by more developed communities in their own lands and the students would never allow that to happen in Mizoram. “We will never allow any women married to non-tribal community getting tickets in the elections in the state,” he added.

MZP Vice President C. Lalremruata, speaking to Northeast Live said, “As the assembly election is coming in Mizoram, MZP is firm on its stand that we will object the candidature of non-local spouse as the Mizo society is a small community as compared to others. If the political parties defy our request we are ready to take a stronger action.”

Among 40 assembly constituencies in Mizoram, except for Aizawl East-I seat, the rest are reserved for Scheduled Tribes.

MNF and ZPM already declared their candidates and there are no women candidate who are married to non-Mizos. Sources said that Mizoram Congress is likely to give ticket to Meriam L. Hrangchal to contest from the Lunglei South constituency. She is married to a non-Mizo. The Congress is expected to announce their candidates list during Rahul Gandhi’s visit.
