Minister said the state government wants to formalise and expand these efforts to benefit more job seekers.
In a major step to boost overseas employment for youth in Mizoram, the Labour, Employment, Skill Development & Entrepreneurship Minister, Lalnghinglova Hmar, held a strategic meeting with senior Japanese diplomats in New Delhi on Thursday.
During the meeting, Lalnghinglova Hmar discussed job opportunities with Hagiwara Ryusuke and Tsubakimoto Mayumi, both First Secretaries at the Embassy of Japan. The talks focused on exploring ways to send skilled workers from Mizoram to work in Japan’s caregiving and hospitality sectors, which are in high demand due to Japan’s ageing population.
“Japan has the demand, and we can provide the supply,” Tetea Hmar stated. He highlighted that several Mizo youths are already working in Japan under different LESDE initiatives. He said the state government wants to formalise and expand these efforts to benefit more job seekers.
The minister also said that many Mizo youths feel a strong cultural connection with Japan. “The fascination with Japanese culture is clear every time cosplay events are held in Mizoram,” Hmar said, suggesting this cultural interest could help strengthen ties between the two sides.
The Japanese officials welcomed the proposal and praised the potential of Mizo workers, especially in caregiving and nursing sectors. They noted that Mizoram has sent fewer workers to Japan compared to other Indian states. They encouraged the state to deepen engagement not just in employment but also in sports and cultural exchanges.
The meeting marks a promising beginning for stronger cooperation between Mizoram and Japan, with both parties expressing commitment to building ties through workforce development and cultural partnerships.
