Mizoram Governor strongly advocated for innovative solutions to tackle Aizawl’s worsening urban congestion.
In a major push for sustainable urban connectivity and decongesting Aizawl, Mizoram Governor General (Retd) Vijay Kumar Singh has called for masive ropeway projects in the state.
In a meeting held at Raj Bhavan on Tuesday with senior officials from the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH), National Highways Logistics Management Limited (NHLML), and the State’s Urban Development & Poverty Alleviation (UD&PA) Department, Governor Singh spoke about unlocking the transformative potential of ropeway projects under the Government of India’s flagship National Ropeways Development Programme, Parvatmala Pariyojana.
Governor strongly advocated for innovative solutions to tackle Aizawl’s worsening urban congestion. He stressed the urgency of advancing ropeway-based connectivity to ease the city’s transport challenges. Pointing to the limited availability of vacant land in the capital city, he urged officials to consider viable sites beyond the crowded city center for project implementation.
He stressed the importance of thorough planning to ensure that public concerns are addressed early on. The Governor described the Parvatmala initiative as an important step toward sustainable development in Mizoram’s hilly terrain, connecting distant points and improving access for people living in challenging topographies. He also called for active coordination with other line departments to implement the ropeway scheme effectively.
Vinay Kumar, Additional Secretary of MoRTH, reaffirmed the ministry’s firm commitment to supporting ropeway projects in Mizoram. He said that the Parvatmala programme is designed to boost connectivity in mountainous states like Mizoram and that 90% of the revenue generated through these projects will be reinvested in local development. This reinvestment, he said, would fuel economic growth and infrastructure expansion across the region.
UD&PA Secretary Lalmalsawma Pachuau delivered a detailed PowerPoint presentation on the proposed ropeway corridors in Aizawl and its surrounding areas. These are being developed under the ‘Ropeways Under Aizawl Sustainable Urban Transport Project (ASUTP)’. He laid out the Comprehensive Mobility Plan, covering 280 square kilometers, aimed at easing traffic pressure in the city. The plan includes not only ropeways but also pedestrian-friendly infrastructure, a regional truck terminal, improved bus and truck stations, and a modernized public transport network.
