Mizoram CM Lalduhoma’s Vision of Thenzawl Peace City Moving Closer to Becoming Reality

First Published: 4th June, 2025 20:48 IST

The Housing and Urban Affairs has sanctioned Rs 10 crore for the preparation of the city's master plan

Mizoram Chief Minister Lalduhoma’s vision of establishing Thenzawl Peace City as a fully planned, purpose-built hill city in Serchhip District today moved a step closer to becoming a reality.

A high-level meeting to review the master plan for the project was convened today under the chairmanship of the Chief Minister. The Chief Minister highlighted the area’s abundance of fresh springs, which, while a natural asset, also contribute to seasonal flooding during the monsoon. To address this, the master plan will incorporate designed waterways, featuring rivers and lakes integrated into the cityscape—both to manage excess rainwater and to enhance the city’s appeal as a tourist destination.

Unlike most cities in Mizoram that have developed haphazardly due to necessity, Thenzawl Peace City is poised to be a well-planned urban centre, built with foresight and intention. The project will also include reserved plots for future government infrastructure, further ensuring its long-term utility and adaptability.
The Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs has sanctioned Rs 10 crore for the preparation of the city’s master plan.

An initial 10% of the fund has already been released, with a further 25% to be disbursed upon selection of a planning agency. An additional 35% will be released upon submission of the Detailed Project Report (DPR), and the remaining 30% upon final approval and submission of the plan.

With planning underway and funding beginning to flow, Thenzawl Peace City is on track to become Mizoram’s first purpose-built hill city.

Located just a few hours’ drive from the state capital, this city aims to become a model for organised urban growth in the region.

Planned across 108 square kilometres, with 82 square kilometres dedicated to urban development, Thenzawl Peace City is envisioned to accommodate up to 10 lakh residents, with a population density of 100 persons per hectare. Presently, the town of Thenzawl has an estimated population of around 10,000 people.

Today’s meeting was attended by the Home Minister, the Minister for Urban Development and Poverty Alleviation, the Chief Secretary and other senior officials.
