A boxing coach in Mizoram, Lalthlengliana, was arrested on Tuesday after four under-17 female athletes accused him of sexual misconduct during training sessions and while attending a national boxing championship in Haryana.

According to officials, the accused had accompanied the state team to the 6th Junior (U-17) Boys and Girls National Boxing Championships held in Rohtak. The complaint was initially submitted by the athletes to the Child Welfare Committee (CWC) in Aizawl, which later referred the matter to the Women Police Station. A FIR was promptly registered, and the coach was taken into custody the same evening.

As per the complaint, the alleged incidents took place during training at the Mizoram Boxing Association (MIZBA) facility in Ramhlun Sports Complex, Aizawl, and continued during the team’s stay in Rohtak. The athletes have alleged that the coach attempted to make inappropriate physical contact and behaved in a manner that made them feel unsafe. The complaint also states that he attempted to access the bathroom area while the girls were bathing.

A case has been registered under relevant provisions of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act, 2012. The accused is currently in police custody as the investigation progresses, with statements being recorded and evidence being reviewed.

This incident has led to growing concern about the appointment practices of sports authorities. While no formal complaint has been filed against the Mizoram Boxing Association, several voices have questioned the decision to assign a male coach to an underage girls’ team without adequate safeguards.
