First Published: 7th October, 2022 13:51 IST

The incident took place at Taphou Naga Village in Senapati District and the residence belonged to the Village Chief.

In an unprecedented move, unidentified miscreants broke into the residence of Robert T Maram, an independent MLA candidate who contested for the Tadubi seat during the last state election.

The miscreants broke into the property during the wee hours today and set fire to a 4-wheeler before escaping under the cover of the dark.

The incident took place at Taphou Naga Village in Senapati District and the residence belonged to the Village Chief.

Locals woke up to the sound of alarms from the burning vehicle between 1 and 2 am today. Villagers reportedly brought water and doused the fire but the damage had already been done and the vehicle was burnt beyond repair.

Another vehicle parked nearby was also partly burnt during the incident.

Miscreants also reportedly poured Petrol on the sofa and blankets kept outside in the verandah but presumably escaped after the alarm from the burning vehicle.

A CCTV camera was installed at the front gate of the residence but the miscreants reportedly entered the compound from the backyard.

Addressing the media, Taphou Naga village Secretary, Karaiba, condemned the incident and demanded swift action to catch the culprits. An FIR has been filed at the Senapati Police Station.

It needs to be mentioned here that the owner of the vehicle, Robert T Maram, contested as an independent MLA candidate during the last state election.

He was also the former Working President of the Naga People’s Front, Manipur State Unit before he contested the election.
