Representatives of the Meitei community in Mizoram in the name of the All Mizoram Manipuri Association (AMMA) met Governor Dr. Hari Babu Kambhampati at the Raj Bhavan on Wednesday.
In their meeting with the Governor, the leaders of the Meitei Community in Mizoram, first expressed their sincere gratitude to the Young Mizo Association (YMA), students’ leaders, and the civil societies for understanding and being supportive of their community in the state.
They also stated their anguish and sadness at the unfortunate situation in the state of Manipur and they appealed for calm and the urgent intervention of the higher authorities to find a way for meaningful solutions through dialogues and peaceful negotiations.
They also made an appeal to the President of India Droupadi Murmu through a memorandum through the Governor to ensure that peace and calm return to Manipur at the earliest.
Though a sizable number of Meitei community are residing in Mizoram, especially as vehicle mechanics, tailors and some of them engaging in petty trades, the number cannot be ascertained, a senior government official said.
While around 100 Meitei people have been evacuated by flights from Aizawl to Imphal on May 7 in the return flights from Imphal which evacuated around the same number of Mizos, a number of them might have left the state for neighbouring Assam by road.
At least hundreds, if not thousands are expected to be living in Mizoram till date.
