This is the first time ever that representatives from both the communities have sat together since violence broke out in Manipur in 2023.
In a significant step towards restoring peace in Manipur, leaders of the civil society organisations (CSOs) representing the warring Meitei and Kuki communities sat together in New Delhi with officials of the Union Home Ministry to talk about peace in Manipur.
This is the first time ever that representatives from both the communities have sat together since violence broke out in Manipur in May 2023.
This meeting marked a historic move, as previous dialogues were held separately with organisations from each community. Sources said the government organised the meeting as part of its continued efforts to find an amicable solution to the prolonged conflict that has gripped the state for over a year.
Sources said the discussions focused on rebuilding trust, improving cooperation, and outlining a roadmap to bring back normalcy in the restive northeastern state. The talks also stressed the importance of maintaining law and order and promoting reconciliation between the two communities.
A six-member delegation representing the Meitei community attended the meeting. It included three representatives from the All Manipur United Clubs’ Organisation (AMUCO), led by its president Pheiroijam Nando Luwang, and three members from the Federation of Civil Society Organisations (FOCS), led by its leader BM Yaima.
The Kuki-Zo side was represented by a seven-member delegation comprising key leaders from various organisations. The delegation included Zomi Council Chairman N. Vumsuan Nauluk and Secretary Pauneihlal; Kuki Inpi Manipur President Ajang Khongsai; Kuki-Zo Council Chairman Henlenthang Thanglet; United Zou Organisation President Thangzamang; Hmar Inpi President Rev. Ros Infimate, and Secretary of the Political Advisory Committee David Buhril.
Retired Intelligence Bureau Special Director A.K. Mishra, who is serving as the Centre’s interlocutor, led the government’s side in the peace talks.
Earlier, during a debate in the Lok Sabha on Thursday, Union Home Minister Amit Shah had informed the House that the Ministry of Home Affairs had already held discussions with representatives of both Meitei and Kuki communities in separate meetings.
