Meghalaya to Redeploy Teachers from Zero Enrollment Schools
First Published: 23rd January, 2025 20:30 IST
At least 206 schools in Meghalaya have no students, while 2,269 schools report single-digit enrollment, including 30 Samagra Shiksha Abhiyan (SSA) schools with zero enrollment.
Meghalaya Education Minister Rakkam A Sangma on Thursday announced that teachers from schools with zero enrollment will be appointed in those with higher student numbers.
Currently, 206 schools in Meghalaya have no students, while 2,269 schools report single-digit enrollment, including 30 Samagra Shiksha Abhiyan (SSA) schools with zero enrollment.
Speaking to the media, Sangma said, “The state government is aware of this problem. Over the past two years, we have initiated efforts to shift and reallocate teachers from these schools. A rationalization exercise is underway, and more than 100 schools with zero enrollment are being reviewed.”
Sangma further stated that teachers are being relocated to schools with higher student numbers to ensure that resources are better utilized.
“For schools with zero enrollment, we are relocating teachers to institutions with higher student numbers. Most of these zero-enrollment schools fall under SSA and government categories. Simply closing these schools is not an option, so we need to study their location and proximity to other schools before making decisions”, Education Minister added.
“In some cases, we are considering taking over these schools and converting them into fully government-run institutions, although this presents financial challenges,” he further added.
However, the state spends Rs 1,967 crores annually on teacher salaries, with the majority allocated to government-aided and SSA schools.
School Managing Committees have been urged to enhance the educational environment to address these challenges.
