He added that a detailed program for the initiative would be finalized within the next two to three months.

Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma has announced that the state government is preparing to launch a comprehensive research project aimed at tracing the roots and origins of the state’s diverse tribal communities. Sangma made the announcement during the inaugural session of a two-day national seminar titled “His Footprints in Time: Trailblazers of Meghalaya in the Making of Modern India,” held at Synod College, Shillong, on May 15–16. The seminar was organised by the Centre for Historical Research (CHRSC) as part of its Diamond Jubilee celebrations.

The research initiative will involve the formation of a special team under the Department of Arts and Culture to conduct in-depth studies, both within India and abroad, to piece together the historical journey of Meghalaya’s tribes. Sangma emphasized that the project aims to strengthen the cultural identity of the state’s indigenous communities and preserve their rich heritage. He added that a detailed program for the initiative would be finalized within the next two to three months.

During the event, a special felicitation ceremony was held to honour numerous personalities and families whose contributions in fields such as education, politics, literature, social reform, indigenous knowledge systems, and theology have left a lasting impact on society. Their legacies are now part of the growing CHRSC archive, reflecting the rich history and vibrant culture of Meghalaya.
