Meghalaya Largest Football Stadium: This stadium will be the first of its kind in India—designed solely for football.

In a major boost to sports infrastructure in India, Meghalaya is set to construct the country’s largest dedicated football stadium at an estimated cost of Rs 700 crore.

Announcing the landmark project, Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma stated that construction work at the Mawkhanu Sports Complex is expected to begin within a week, weather permitting. Once completed by 2027, this stadium will be the first of its kind in India—designed solely for football, unlike multipurpose venues seen elsewhere.

This ambitious project is part of Meghalaya’s comprehensive football development plan. Alongside the stadium, the state is rolling out an unprecedented initiative to install 50 artificial football turfs by 2027 the highest in any Indian state. Of these, 25 are already under construction, while another 25 have received approval.

“This is more than just infrastructure. It is about creating a sustainable grassroots football ecosystem,” said CM Sangma. The goal, he emphasized, is to make football accessible across every region of the state, providing young talent with the proper environment to train, play, and grow.

The state government’s vision extends beyond infrastructure. To foster a deep-rooted sporting culture, plans are underway to introduce structured football leagues at district, block, and village levels. The idea is to get children excited about weekend matches, regular training, and competitive opportunities laying the foundation for Meghalaya to emerge as a powerhouse in Indian football.

Once complete, the stadium at Mawkhanu will not only serve as a national landmark but also symbolize Meghalaya’s rising status in the world of football. With a clear focus on grassroots development and infrastructure, the state is setting a benchmark for others to follow.

By combining top-tier infrastructure with grassroots engagement, Meghalaya is making a bold statement: that the future of Indian football may well be shaped from its hills.
