The Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan teachers of Meghalaya are threatening to intensify their protests. The aggrieved SSA teachers have stated that stricter action would be taken if their salaries are further delayed.

Aristotle Rymbai, the President of The Meghalaya SSA Schools’ Association said that in spite of the assurances by state education minister Lahkmen Rymbui, their pending salaries have not been paid yet. Rymbai said that it was assured that their salaries would be released in two months time, however so far it has been 20 days but nothing has been done so far.

Rymbai questioned the promise of the State Government and the education minister and termed it as a ‘delaying tactic’ to pacify the agitating teachers who recently carried a mass march to the Meghalaya Secretariat .

Rymbai further added that the Government should not force the SSA teachers to hit the street again this time with their family and friends.

Meanwhile, even as the MSSASA today issued a fresh warning to the Meghalaya government, members of the Federation of All School Teachers of Meghalaya today marched from outside the Raj Bhawan till Malki ground while protesting against the delay by the state government in fulfilling their demand for upgrading all ad hoc schools to deficit system or deficit pattern with effect from 2019.

FASTOM executive member Mayborn Lyngdoh said that number of participation is only 30 per the permission of the district administration. He said that the stir will only intensify and continue until their demands are met.

Lyngdoh said come April and they will go all out and also called upon the parents of their students to support them for their cause. He informed that from Wednesday onwards a group of five teachers will protest outside MBOSE everyday and it will continue.

Currently, the monthly salary of a lower primary school teacher is Rs 12,000. The pay of an upper primary, a secondary and a higher secondary school teacher is Rs 16,000, Rs 20,000 and Rs 24,000 respectively. There is no additional allowance for teachers in each of these categories.

The protesting teachers have stated their movement is now beyond negotiation and assured that it will not affect the students as they are preparing for their board exams.
