The process for introduction of NCERT textbooks for certain subjects will start from next academic year.

The Meghalaya Cabinet at its meeting held on Thursday in Shillong approved the proposal for adaptation of NCERT Text Books with modifications in certain subjects to be carried out by MBOSE. This will allow the adaptation of the NCERT textbooks with necessary modifications from Class I to X.

For schools teaching in local/vernacular language (from Class I to V), the necessary changes in language will be done for the adaptation to take place. The process for Phase 1 will start in the next academic year, Chief Minister Conrad Sangma said addressing the media after the meeting.

“As a Government, we are deeply concerned about the education system in the state. After consultation and research with many stakeholders in the education system, we have concluded that most of the MBOSE textbooks especially for Mathematics, Science and English are not up to the National standards. This adaptation aims to improve- the overall quality of textbooks, learning outcomes, quality of content, which also will lead to the reduction in the number of textbooks. We will also ensure the curriculum is adapted to the national curriculum with adaptation to local content based on our culture and history,” the CM said.

CM Sangma said, “The cabinet decision taken today to allow the adaptation of the NCERT textbooks with necessary modification from class 1 to 10. There are certain schools that are in local and vernacular language for them for class 1 to 5 the adaptation or necessary changes in the language will be done and once the translation is done then the adaptation will take place.”

“It’s the same system but we are improving it. Textbooks were always there but there were 11-12 textbooks for Class 1 whereas now there will be four textbooks and they will be very concise. There were 17 textbooks for Class but now there will be 7-8. It is just streamlining and making the system more efficient,” the CM added.

The Cabinet also approved the Permanant Meghalaya Education Recruitment Board.

The Chief Minister said that there are close to about 187 vacancies in the Secondary & Higher Secondary and Higher and Technical Education levels for which the vacancies were not filled for 3 to 4 years.

However, the board will be directed to fill up the recruitment process within 3 to 6 months.
