Meghalaya rain fury: Multiple landslides reported, CM Conrad Sangma chairs review meet

During the meeting the Meghalaya Chief Minister took stock of the preparedness to deal with any kind of eventuality arising out of heavy rainfall coupled with landslides.

Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad Sangma today chaired a key meeting to review the preparedness in view of heavy rainfall, that has resulted in several incidents of landslides in different parts of the state.
Sharing more details about the meeting, Sanjay Goyal, Commissioner and Secretary of the Revenue and Disaster Management department, informed that landslides have been reported from at least 4 districts in the state.

He informed, “As we are experiencing continuous rainfall since yesterday, in view of that in few places of the state we have experienced some landslides. Chief Minister Conrad Sangma has reviewed it today morning with all the districts. The report which we have as of now is that in 4 districts we have got updates of landslides like in Ri Bhoi, Eastern West Khasi Hills, West Garo Hills, in some parts of Tura town we have experienced minor landslides and in West Khasi Hills. These are landslides minor in nature and roads were blocked for some duration.”

Goyal said that agencies are on the job to clear the debris and restore communication through roads blocked by the landslides.

“We have been involving officials of the PWD, officers from the forest department who cleared them at the earliest possible. There have been certain cases of tree getting uprooted even in Shillong in the Golf Link area. Apart from that there has not been any report of loss of life or loss of any animal life also. There might be some minor cases of damage to property. We are taking steps to give them relief as per the norms,” the Commissioner and Secretary of the Meghalaya Revenue and Disaster Management department said.

Asked about how prepared is the department to face the situation, Goyal stated, “The DCs, we are in touch with them continuously. Our teams in the field are on the highest alert, we will be in a position to handle any kind of events which are happening.”
