Meghalaya Police Collects Rs 13.35 Lakh in Fines Amid Crack Down on Black Films and Tinted Glass
First Published: 6th September, 2024 21:34 IST
Only Ministers and MLAs are allowed to use these films, and that too, only on one of their vehicles, said East Khasi Hills District Superintendent of Police, Sylvester.
In a strong enforcement drive against black films and tinted glass on vehicle windows, the East Khasi Hills District Police in Meghalaya have registered 1,788 cases between July and September and collected a total of Rs 13.35 lakh in fines.
Speaking to media, East Khasi Hills District Superintendent of Police, Sylvester said that the Shillong Traffic Police has detected these cases between July 1 to September 6, 2024.
SP Sylvester said that police not only fined the vehicle owners for flouting rules but also removed the tinted glasses.
For addressing the issue, SP Sylvester said that the police will first focus on inspecting and addressing violations related to vehicles equipped with such films on the road. After this, the enforcement effort will extend to investigating and regulating shops that sell these tinted glasses and black films.
The SP said that under the Motor Vehicles Act 1988 and Supreme Court directives, tinted glasses and black films are restricted. Only Ministers and MLAs are allowed to use these films, and that too, only on one of their vehicles. The general public are restricted from using tinted glasses and black films on any of their vehicles.
To enhance road safety and ensure compliance with vehicle visibility regulations, addressing concerns over security and clear driving conditions, the Shillong Traffic Police started the drive on July 1, 2024.
It may be mentioned here that the usage of tinted glasses on vehicles was banned in India by the Supreme Court in 2012 to reduce the excessive number of crimes committed in moving cars and to ensure the safety of both citizens and passengers.
According to Indian laws, car windows must have a minimum visibility of 70 % for rear and front glasses and 50 % for side glasses.
