The Task Force Committee will be headed by the additional chief engineer of the department, the Minister said.

Meghalaya Public Health Engineering (PHE) Minister, Marcuise N Marak said on Thursday that the department has constituted a task force committee (TFC) to study and monitor the water quality that is being supplied to Shillong city.

The Task Force Committee will be headed by the additional chief engineer of the department, the Minister said.

The TFC has been set up after a report of the State Food Testing Laboratory Commissionerate of Food Safety, Pasteur Hills, Shillong submitted by Federation of Khasi Jaintia & Garo people (FKJGP) to the Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma stating that the water being supplied to homes in Shillong is contaminated and not safe for consumption.

The water samples were collected for random sampling from 46 different localities across Shillong city by members of the FKJGP on August 22, following numerous complaints received regarding the quality of drinking water.

While speaking to media, Marak said, “The function of the task force will be to address the water quality related to complaints pertaining to water supply from GSWSS-I and II to Shillong, to collect water samples from different water sampling points both raw water and treated water under the jurisdiction for regular analysis to ensure proper dosing of chemicals and proper procedures in the water treatment plant as per CPHEEO Manual and Water Quality Monitoring Protocol and quality control of chemicals.”

He said that the committee will also fix the responsibility against any errant officers and staff, to propose research and development measures if need be on quality issues pertaining to water supply from GSWSS.

“The task force can co-opt any member as and when required,” the Minister added.
