Speaking on behalf of Vice Chancellor (In-Charge) Prof. S. Sungoh, NEHU Public Relations Officer Dr. Davidson Pyngrope said, “We condemn such kind of violence inside the university campus. The matter is being investigated by the police to find out what has transpired between the assaulters and Professor Singh. We have initiated the process of forming an enquiry committee to address the issue. Right now we do not know whose fault it was. However, we ensure the security of both students and the faculty members of the university and that no such incident occurs in the near future.”

Earlier speaking to Northeast Live, Professor Singh said, ” I was sitting in my chamber and was talking to one of my research scholars about a topic. When a student came and said that few students wanted to meet me. So I said okay and then the student came along with 6 others. President of the North Eastern Hill University Students’ Union (NEHUSU) Sandy Sohtun was one among them. I know them all. They locked my chamber from inside, snatched my mobile phone, and watch, and removed all wires from my computer. Two of them caught my hands and the rest started beating me. I asked what happened. They said I am working here by following a particular ideology. They even put a paper scissor on my neck and threatened to kill me. They kept beating me continuously saying ‘You do politics here’. I am still terrified.”

Dr. Singh said that he also reach out to the President of the North Eastern Hill University Teachers’ Association (NEHUTA), but received no response.

He expressed his shock and disappointment over the incident, stating, “I am shocked and depressed. I am not safe in my own University. I feel extremely sad that such an incident took place inside such a prominent institution.”
