Minister Rakkam A Sangma said that he will soon submit a petition to the centre through Chief Minister Conrad Sangma demanding the same.

Meghalaya Minister for Education and Border Area Development, Rakkam Sangma has once again batted for a rail line connecting Guwahati with Dhaka, the capital city of neighbouring Bangladesh via Baghmara in Meghalaya.

With South Garo Hills District often cut off due to poor road infrastructure, Minister Sangma is also demanding a proper highway connecting Guwahati-Baghmara-Dhaka.

Minister Rakkam A Sangma said that he will soon submit a petition to the centre through Chief Minister Conrad Sangma demanding the establishment of a bus stop and railway connectivity from Guwahati to Dhaka, via Baghamara as well as for a direct highway from Guwahati to Dhaka.

Speaking exclusively to Northeast Live, Minister Sangma highlighted the potential impact of such infrastructure and said, “The distance between Dhaka and Baghamara is 183 km, and if we have an integrated system including a proper check gate and a bus system from Guwahati to Dhaka, people from Bangladesh could easily travel to Meghalaya. This would facilitate education, business, and tourism exchanges, benefiting both regions. Moreover, there would be many guest houses, marketplaces, hotels etc.”

Earlier in 2023, demanding the same, Minister Sangma said that rail projects might have its demerits but people should weigh the merits as rail connectivity would bolster job and business opportunities, help unemployed youths of the state and boost trade and economy and the living conditions of the people of Meghalaya.
