Minister Shylla cautioned against reckless behavior that could spark forest fires, urging people to refrain from setting fires near forest areas without valid reasons.
Amid growing concerns over the frequency and severity of forest fires in Meghalaya, which pose significant threats to biodiversity, wildlife habitats, and the environment at large, Cabinet Minister and United Democratic Party (UDP) leader Kyrmen Shylla today emphasized the urgent need for collective efforts and collaboration between people and the state government to address the escalating risk of forest fires.
He stressed the importance of adopting sustainable practices and responsible behaviour to mitigate the devastating impact of these fires on the state’s natural landscapes.
Speaking to Northeast Live, Minister Shylla cautioned against reckless behaviour that could spark forest fires, urging people to refrain from setting fires near forest areas without valid reasons.
“ I have seen especially in the rural areas, most of the time, children light forest just for fun, villagers cut down forests, burns grass. However, these fires often result in unintended forest fires with devastating consequences. People across the world are trying to protect the trees to save the world. So if we refrain from cutting and burning trees, I believe we can save the world,” said Minister Shylla.
Speaking about what mechanisms the state government is exploring to prevent forest fires and if it is considering introducing any rule, Minister Shylla said, “We cannot make rules alone. We have to abide by the Center’s rules. We need to get the centre’s approval. We can proceed if the centre gives its clearance. We are, however, open to suggestions from the general public as to what kind of rules we should introduce.”
