Meghalaya Man Takes Bold Leap from Government Job to Handicraft Artisan

What began as a dream of securing a government job has turned into a thriving career for WA Sangma, a skilled artisan from Williamnagar. For over 22 years, Sangma has dedicated himself to crafting exquisite handicrafts that reflect the vibrant cultural heritage of the Garo Hills, Meghalaya.

Initially aspiring for a government job, Sangma’s plans took a different turn when he decided to pursue his passion for handicrafts as a full-time career. What started as a personal hobby evolved into a sustainable livelihood, allowing him to support his family and gain recognition across the region.

“For many times I tried for government job earlier, but didn’t get the opportunity. Since 2002 , I started my journey in this field and almost completed 22 years now,” he stated.

Sangma’s handcrafted creations, inspired by traditional Garo designs and techniques, have become a hit at exhibitions and local markets. Each event earns him an income ranging from Rs 15,000 to Rs 25,000, with some events bringing in even higher earnings depending on demand.

Despite operating independently, Sangma’s resilience and dedication have made him a prominent figure in the local artisan community. His success story underscores the importance of embracing personal skills and creativity, not only to build a livelihood but also to preserve and promote the cultural identity of the Garo Hills.

Through his craftsmanship, Sangma showcases how determination and adaptability can transform challenges into opportunities, inspiring others to explore alternative careers beyond traditional aspirations.
