The Meghalaya cabinet on Friday approved the proposal to set up 3 medical colleges in the state.

Making the announcement Health Minister Dr Ampareen Lyngdoh said that the colleges include the Tura Medical College, Shillong Medical College, and a collaboration with USTM to establish a college in Ri-Bhoi.

Minister Lyngdoh said that the health department would now proceed with the next crucial steps in this initiative, primarily focusing on finalizing the roadmap for the immediate establishment of the three medical colleges.

“Each of these colleges will serve a distinct region – Shillong, Tura, and Ri Bhoi district,” stated Ampareen Lyngdoh.

Speaking to Northeast live, Principal Secretary Sampath Kumar, provided insights into the strategic proposal. He highlighted that Tura Medical College was already in progress with 44% of its construction completed.

Kumar explained that Shillong Medical College’s development would utilize existing resources, such as Civil Hospitals Shillong and Ganesh Das Hospital. This approach aims to leverage the existing infrastructure, and human resources, including potential faculty members, and create a comprehensive plan for the college’s establishment. The goal is to initiate the process and complete Shillong Medical College within the next two to three years.

As for the Ri-Bhoi district, a unique collaboration with USTM is underway to establish a private medical college. The university has sought assistance and a loan from the state government, amounting to over 200 crores, for the creation of this institution.

The Tura Medical College is expected to be a 100-bed facility, while the initial capacity for Shillong Medical College will be 50 beds.
