Meghalaya: Cabinet on Tuesday approved a significant enhancement of post-retirement benefits for retired Chief Justices and Judges.
The Meghalaya Cabinet on Tuesday approved a significant enhancement of post-retirement benefits for retired Chief Justices and Judges of the Meghalaya High Court. Announcing the decision, Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma said that the benefits include 1,000 units of free electricity per month, a mobile recharge allowance of Rs 4,200 plus taxes, and 100 litres of petrol.
These benefits come under an amendment to the Retired Judges’ Secretarial Assistant and Domestic Help Rules, 2013. In a post on X, CM Sangma wrote, “Cabinet approved the proposal to amend the Retired Judges’ Secretarial Assistant and Domestic Help Rules 2013. Retired Judges have proposed to the State Government for the enhancement of post-retirement benefits… Cabinet has approved the enhancement.”
However, these benefits will cease if the retired judges are reappointed or engaged in specified official capacities, such as serving as chairpersons of commissions.
The Cabinet also approved an increase in the sitting allowance for the search committee tasked with recommending names for the Lokayukta. The committee chairman’s allowance has been raised from Rs 3,000 to Rs 6,000, while members will now receive Rs 5,000, up from Rs 2,500.
In a step towards promoting linguistic inclusivity, the Cabinet also amended the Meghalaya State Language Act, 2005, officially recognising Khasi and Garo as associate official languages for district-level exams.
Further, the Cabinet approved the Meghalaya Witness Protection Scheme, 2025. This move is aimed at ensuring comprehensive protection for witnesses, in line with the new national criminal law framework, including the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita, 2023, Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023, and Bharatiya Sakshya Adhiniyam, 2023, all set to take effect from July 1, 2024.
