The Meghalaya government has sanctioned an additional Rs 15 crore for the second phase of the redevelopment of Iewduh, Shillong’s historic and largest traditional market.
The announcement was made by Chief Minister Conrad Sangma during a high-level inspection visit to the site today.
The project aims to modernise infrastructure, such as improving drainage, upgrading footpaths etc., while preserving the livelihoods of nearly one lakh people who depend on the market either directly or indirectly.
Taking to X, CM Sangma wrote, “There’s a lot that needs to be done, and today’s rain offered valuable insight into the daily challenges faced by the public and shopkeepers alike. We have already sanctioned ₹6 Crores for initial renovations and are committed to extending an additional ₹15 Crores. Our aim is to revamp Shillong’s market hub, Ïewduh, the heartbeat of our farmers and traders by providing the necessary infrastructure and amenities to improve commuting, trading, and daily life for all.”
The first phase of redevelopment, funded by a Rs 6 crore state allocation, is already in progress. It includes repairs and upgradation of footpaths, many of which are being finished with natural stonework for durability and aesthetic appeal.
Chief Minister Sangma said that the second phase will focus on shifting existing utility pipes currently laid along footpaths into underground ducts, thereby expanding walkable space. A complete overhaul of the drainage system is also planned to address long-standing issues of clogged drains and stagnant water, particularly during the rainy season.
Given the economic centrality of Iewduh, the government has emphasised a livelihood-sensitive approach.
The Chief Minister assured that redevelopment efforts would be calibrated to avoid disruption to daily business activities while steadily improving the market’s infrastructure.
CM Sangma was accompanied by Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong, Tourism Minister Paul Lyngdoh, representatives of Hima Mylliem, and officials from various government departments. The delegation assessed ongoing works and reviewed persistent challenges, particularly related to drainage and waterlogging, which worsen during monsoon rains.
During the site visit, vendors shared pressing concerns such as inadequate drainage and persistent waterlogging, congested walkways and narrow access points and lack of basic amenities like electricity in several zones.
In addition to the state funding, the redevelopment is also being supported by Rs 10 crore from the North Eastern Council (NEC).
Tendering for the newly sanctioned Rs 15 crore is expected to begin soon, with physical work projected to commence in the coming months, weather permitting.
