Meghalaya: According to the MSDMA, the heavy rains affected 86 villages spread across 23 administrative blocks.

Meghalaya Revenue and Disaster Management Minister Kyrmen Shylla has announced that the state government has disbursed ex gratia payments of Rs 4 lakh each to the families of the six individuals who lost their lives in the recent rain-induced disaster that affected several districts in the state.

Speaking to Northeast Live, Minister Shylla confirmed that five of the affected families have already received the compensation, while the sixth will receive it shortly. The amount is currently with the concerned Block Development Officer (BDO) and will be handed over to the bereaved family soon.

The announcement follows a devastating spell of incessant rainfall between May 29 and June 1, which claimed six lives, injured four, and impacted at least 1,221 people across the state.

According to the Meghalaya State Disaster Management Authority (MSDMA), the heavy rains affected 86 villages spread across 23 administrative blocks.

In a proactive move to support district administrations, the Meghalaya government has released an advance fund of Rs 19.45 crore to Deputy Commissioners across all districts. This fund is aimed at enabling immediate relief, rescue, and restoration work without delays often caused by bureaucratic approvals.

Shylla said, “Rs 19.45 Cr has been released so far. This is not the final amount; additional support will be extended as needed. The aim is to ensure that people do not suffer due to administrative delays. Earlier, we had to wait for committees to meet and approve fund disbursement, which delayed urgent relief efforts. Now, with advance funds, Deputy Commissioners can act immediately.”

Highlighting the district-wise availability of funds, Minister Shylla detailed the allocations:

East Khasi Hills: Rs 4.59 crore
West Khasi Hills (Nongstoin): Rs 1.22 crore
South West Khasi Hills: Rs 61,755
Ri-Bhoi District: Rs 1.21 crore
West Jaintia Hills (Jowai): Rs 75.37 lakh
East Jaintia Hills: Rs 4.82 lakh
East Garo Hills (Williamnagar): Rs 1.11 crore
West Garo Hills (Tura): Rs 1.85 crore
North Garo Hills: Rs 91 lakh
South Garo Hills: Rs 1.18 crore
South West Garo Hills: Rs 1.46 crore
East and West Khasi Hills (combined): Rs 4.47 crore

Shylla emphasized that the Deputy Commissioners have been given full authority to utilize these funds based on local requirements. The government remains committed to ensuring timely assistance, accelerating relief measures, and supporting affected communities.
