Meghalaya Govt Launches Verification Process to Tackle Unrecognized Schools in the State

Swapnil Tembe, highlighted that the Government of India has instructed states to address concerns surrounding unrecognised schools.

Meghalaya is grappling with the issue of nearly 500 unrecognised schools operating across the state despite possessing UDISE codes. This situation has arisen due to legacy practices where government documents were issued without stringent regulatory compliance. However, the matter has now come under scrutiny, prompting state authorities to take corrective measures.

Director of School Education & Literacy, Swapnil Tembe, highlighted that the Government of India has instructed states to address concerns surrounding unrecognised schools. A verification process is currently underway to determine whether these institutions meet the necessary infrastructure and academic standards required for official recognition.

“There are certain schools which are unrecognised in the system, and in our state, there are roughly around 500 such schools. Recognition involves a formal document issued by the government or its officials, including opening permissions, provisional recognition, or permanent recognition,” Tembe explained.

He further added that many schools have been operating without these essential recognitions due to past administrative oversights, despite holding UDISE codes.

In response to this issue, Education Commissioner and Secretary Vijay Mantri convened a high-level review meeting on Friday to discuss key reforms in the school education sector. A crucial topic of discussion was the restructuring of schools through clustering, aimed at streamlining administrative and academic frameworks. Currently, many institutions function as a single entity but are separately registered under different sections—such as LP, UP, and secondary schools—due to funding allocations from various schemes. This practice has inflated the official school count. The proposed consolidation of these institutions aligns with the Chief Minister’s vision for a more efficient education system.

Moreover, the state government is advancing the implementation of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 by promoting composite schools. This model integrates education from pre-primary to Class 12 within a single institution, reducing the need for frequent student transfers between schools. By creating a more seamless and stable learning environment, this initiative aims to address high dropout rates and improve the overall quality of education in Meghalaya.
