Meghalaya Govt Gets Cracking on Human Trafficking, DCM Prestone Tynsong Says will Amend Laws if Needed

Deputy Chief Minister Incharge Home (Police), Prestone Tynsong, highlighted the importance of revisiting both central and state laws, particularly those related to human trafficking.
The Meghalaya Government on Wednesday directed Police Department to submit detailed recommendations identifying defects in existing laws, challenges in their implementation, and areas of concern with regards to the ‘Human Trafficking’ laws are concerned.
This initiative aims to enable the state government to make necessary amendments and improvements.
Deputy Chief Minister Incharge Home (Police), Prestone Tynsong, highlighted the importance of revisiting both central and state laws, particularly those related to human trafficking.
Speaking at a state-level conference on human trafficking organized by the Meghalaya Police and the Ministry of Home Affairs, Tynsong urged the Police Department to provide comprehensive suggestions and submissions following thorough deliberation.
He assured that the state government would act promptly on these recommendations, whether through amendments or executive notifications.
Tynsong also highlighted the need to involve local administration down to the village level, stating that law enforcement alone is not sufficient. He stressed the importance of engaging every level of the community in addressing issues related to human trafficking.
Law Minister Dr. M Ampareen Lyngdoh also urged the Police Department and the Director General of Police to submit recommendations to the state government after their discussions.
She underscored the necessity of ensuring that laws are not just on paper but is effectively implemented to protect citizens. Dr. Lyngdoh called for an urgent assessment of existing laws to identify any gaps or shortcomings, so the government can take appropriate action to combat the grievous crime of human trafficking.
