In a big breakthrough towards responsible coal mining in Meghalaya, the Conrad Sangma government has secured approval for scientific coal mining operations in 3 sites of the state.

Three escrow agreements were signed between the Controller of Coal, Government of India, and project proponents for mining sites at Pyndeng-shalang in West Khasi Hills; Saryng-kham in East Jaintia Hills and Lumia-khi Wah-sarang in East Jaintia Hills.

Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma lauded the signing of the deals as a “monumental and historic day” for Meghalaya and praised the government’s commitment to fulfilling its promise by securing the approvals.
He added that 12 more applications are in advanced stages of approval.

The approval for scientific coal mining is expected to bolster the state’s economy and provide employment opportunities for the youth.

The government had earlier conducted public hearings at three locations where they secured necessary clearances from the Forest and Environment Department and the Pollution Control Board.

In addition to the approval for scientific mining, the Meghalaya government is also prioritising environmental restoration efforts with nearly Rs 500 crore from the Meghalaya Reclamation Fund being allocated to restore degraded mining areas, conserve water bodies and carry out afforestation programmes.
