First Published: 26th January, 2025 18:57 IST

The Governor highlighted that Meghalaya’s GDP has surged from Rs. 23,235 crore in 2015 to Rs. 53,057 crore in 2024.

Meghalaya Governor CH Vijayashankar, while unfurling the Tricolour during the Republic Day celebrations at Polo Ground, Shillong, outlined the state’s ambitious vision to transform into a $10 billion economy by 2028. He emphasised rapid economic growth, robust infrastructure development, and improved welfare measures, all achieved while maintaining peace and stability.

The Governor highlighted that Meghalaya’s GDP has surged from Rs. 23,235 crore in 2015 to Rs. 53,057 crore in 2024, driven by strategic investments in roads, tourism, housing, IT, and power. Over 2,500 kilometers of rural roads were built under PMGSY in the past five years, while key infrastructure projects like the Shillong-Dawki Highway, Shillong Western Bypass, and Tura-Dalu Road are progressing rapidly. A Rs. 2,500 crore Mega Project under Mission 10 aims to develop 300 kilometers of climate-resilient, double-lane road corridors to further boost connectivity.

Urban development remains central to the government’s plan, with New Shillong City at the forefront. The foundation stone for the New Secretariat at Mawdiangdiang has been laid, along with initiatives like the New Shillong Water Supply Scheme, Unity Mall, and enhanced sports infrastructure. The Shillong Integrated Command and Control Centre, equipped with 328 cameras, is already streamlining urban services and traffic management. Redevelopment efforts in Shillong, Tura, and Jowai, including the revival of Jowai’s Iawmusiang Market, are also underway.

In waste management, over 1 lakh metric tons of legacy waste have been cleared from Marten in Shillong, while 15,000 metric tons were removed from Tura’s landfill, transforming these sites into cleaner spaces. Housing remains a priority, with 1.18 lakh homes constructed under PMAY(G), including nearly 83,000 built in the last two years.

Water supply initiatives have seen 5.29 lakh households connected to tap water under the Jal Jeevan Mission, achieving 81.4% coverage surpassing the national average. The government is committed to covering the remaining households soon. Employment generation is also a focus, with 90% of non-managerial jobs in new industries reserved for locals under the Meghalaya State Investment Promotion & Facilitation Act, 2024.

The Governor also stressed modernizing the criminal justice system. He announced the implementation of three new laws, the Bharatiya Nagrik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS), Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), and Bharatiya Sakshya Adhinyam (BSA), in July 2024. To align with these changes, the Forensic Sciences Lab in Shillong has been upgraded to a Directorate, with Mobile Forensic Science Units set up in every district.
