"We have the potential but there may be some gaps that has to be addressed and we are working on that," said Minister Rakkam A Sangma

The Meghalaya government is planning to redesign the state’s education system or to make certain changes in it to ensure quality learning so that the students of the state does not lag behind in the race with rest of the country, said Education Minister Rakkam A Sangma.

Speaking exclusively to Northeast Live, Minister Rakkam A Sangma said that Meghalaya was known as the educational hub of the country. As a Minister, in the last three to four months he figured out where the gaps were and how to restore quality education. After identifying the problematic areas, he considered making improvements and redesigning it for the students’ benefit.

He said, “We have the potential but there may be some gaps that has to be addressed and we are working on that.”

Minister Sangma said, “Our curriculum and syllabus are sometimes out of line with the rest of the country. The curriculum difference could be the reason that we as a state produced fewer UPSC aspirants in past few years. Therefore, we will make the necessary changes so that whatever the curriculum and syllabus, chapters studied in Delhi, Munmbai, and Gujarat will also be taught in the school and colleges of the state. Our children should not lag behind the rest of the country.”

When asked if the government will introduce National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) or Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) Syllabus in the state, the Minister said, “We will not completely introduce NCERT or CBCE syllabus in the state, but will take 70 to 80 percent context from their textbooks and make it and mandatory to use for class 1-12.”
